I've recently seen two very different films at the cinema. One is Breathe - the inspiring and entertaining true story of a man struck down by polio aged 28 and his wife's heroic battle to help him build a new life. The other is Blade Runner 2049 - a plotless, soulless, empty and seemingly endless retread of the Ridley Scott original. I was amazed to read Telegraph critic Robbie Collin's review of these films. He found Breathe 'punishingly twee' and Blade Runner 'the most spectacular blockbuster of our time'. Perhaps that explains why critics are just critics - rather than people of talent, judgement and genuine merit.

Has it struck anyone else that trompe means mistake in French? Has there ever been a bigger one than Donald Trompe?
Waiter, there's an Inuit in my soup!
Hold on a moment, sir - I'll Eskimo he got there. Apparently there's a new initiative to bridge the Islamic sectarian divide. A duet called Sunni and Shia is cutting a single - I Shot You, Babe
While on the subject of politics, when are we going to become less gullible? Brexit promised us billions more for the NHS and no immigration. Trump said he'd build a wall and stop interfering in other countries. Corbyn offered us an end to student loans, etc etc. If someone asked us to vote for them on the grounds that they would give each of us a gold-plated Rolls Royce, an indoor swimming pool and in return we'd only have to work one day a week, would we vote for them? I suspect we would.
Let's face it - we've got some pretty rotten people running the show. Why don't we put everyone's name in a hat, pick out several at random and put them into the top political posts. Could it be any worse?
Instead of rattling sabres at each other, why don't the USA and North Korea settle their differences through a Snip-Off between Trump and Um's hairdressers?
At Heathrow the other day I tripped over a small boy in a Chelsea football shirt. It came as no surprise to find Hazard written on his back
Why is Mrs May so fond of wearing red? She was in red when I met her in 1987 and she wore red on the morning after her election debacle. Is she perhaps a Labour party mole? Or a KGB agent?
